About the image on the cover of this slim book of two essays, a limited print run…
If you look past the text, you’ll see drawings of horses and a cowboy.
These cartoons are on the gravesite of Portland cartoonist John Callahan. The essays in the book bounce against the lives, work and words of prominent Portland writers, over past decades, and Callahan is one. The person in the photo is me, of course…
I wanted an image that would be respectful but hopefully also intriguing….Callahan is known for his efforts at being offensive, so it wouldn’t be out of line to be more irreverent, and I definitely had that thought…then chose this direction instead.
People are complex. Essays have the ability to hold that complexity.
Brent Hirak took the photo, Jen Wick designed the cover. Huge appreciation!
