"Sea Animals," as Read by Tom Spanbauer.
Enter into workshop, join the party, listen...carefully....
Hello,
I had this wish that I could hear Tom Spanbauer read his story, “Sea Animals,” the way he read it way back when some of us—Suzy Vitello, Chuck Palahniuk and me, and others—were in his workshop, all of us just starting out, meeting at Spanbauer’s house.
And, amazingly, there’s a recording!
Of course there is, because we live in the era of the internet and digital everything.
Anyway, so glad to be able to pass this along.
“Tommy…you have to be a grownup, now,” he writes. Ah! Heart. Love. Life. You’ll see, if you listen.
Imagine you’re entering a dark house, a table in the glow of lighting, that lighting replaced by candlelight at the end of workshop, and Tom is reading from his pages. There’s so much to learn through listening to the careful cadence of his voice, the care in his words, the repetition of images and ideas and most of all, heart.
Here it is, the link, fifth down from the top:
