Hey there!
I’ve been wanting to do this for awhile, and I think it’s time to jump in.
I love short stories. I love the craft of short fiction. I believe that short fiction, with its particular mix of compression and unpacked psychological corners, can inform all other writing practices, including novels, memoir, essays and perhaps poetry. It’s the-same-but-different, and in ways, more crystalized, more focused.
I’d like to offer an ongoing craft talk.
Starting in February, I’ll post/send a link to a story on… *Wednesday*… (plot twist? Were you expecting Sunday?)
I’ll send the story on Wednesday so those of you who are interested have time to read it. I’ll send my thoughts about the story out early on the following Sunday, and perhaps include a few questions. The comments will be open for those who want to respond or refute, chime in or talk about the work in any way at all.
Each (or most) Sundays at 11:00 PST (Oregon time) I will use either Zoom or Substack’s video feature to host a short conversation, for paid subscribers.
All of the above—links, comments and community conversation—will be behind the paywall as a way to say THANK YOU!!! To those who continue to support this newsletter, moving forward as writers together.
Since I’ll be the one choosing stories, this series will have a certain aspect of curation. I’ll choose stories I like—though any of you are welcome to offer suggestions, and even shout out your own work if you’d like a published piece to be considered for group discussion.
Think of it as a class without the framework of a class, a drop-in study session, a community chat.
Let’s make it great.
With huge appreciation, and as ever, let me know if you have questions,
Monica
Sounds fun. Thanks.
Zoom convos (!!!)
Excited for this.
