Hey there!
I came across these photos today, taken by somebody else, in a workshop ages ago, (1988, or 1989?) during Clarion Writers Workshop at Michigan State University.
Obviously the rules on the blackboard below don’t exactly wrap up the heart of the craft, but…cover some tics and details that must’ve come up too often! :)
Anything we’d add, in the spirit of this list?
Pretty sure it says:
People in stories should leave their hair alone
Their stomachs should not clench
Eyes of beautiful people should not be green
Bodily fluids should be spilled sparingly
Heterosexual males should not vomit after boring sex
Ladies should not shudder when they meet handsome men
Alien plants should consist of more than one tree, one rock, and rabbits called smerps
The reader must always be sure which characters are Dead
Stories about Karens should take place in Kansas
Whenever possible, ignore all the rules…
And “remember the egg” down in the corner!
Do whatever the reader will allow you to get away with while still keeping the story entertaining.
Corollary for 8.
Dead characters should stay dead.
